Hunt for the Nightingales is an alliance of organisations with the bold mission of sourcing 100,000 new laptops to close the gap of vulnerable students in Ukraine whose schools have been bombed and their education halted.
Hunt for the Nightingales is primarily focused on mobilising wealthy organisations and individuals around the world, to purchase Nightingale laptops that will go to vulnerable students in Ukraine. While our strategic focus is on those organisations with the means to purchase 50+ Nightingale Laptops, we appreciate the generosity of any organisation or individual able to help by funding a laptop - every single laptop gets us closer to putting an end to the education crisis for vulnerable students in Ukraine.
To date, the Ukraine Ministry of Education, Olena Zelensky Foundation, and UNESCO have collectively purchased 230,000 devices to address the huge educational hole caused by the war. Google has also donated 10,000 devices. Nonetheless, there are still over 100,000 vulnerable students without the means to purchase a device for remote learning - bringing their education to a halt for the indefinite future. Hunt for the Nightingales aims to give these students back the chance of an education and a positive future.
The Hunt for the Nightingales alliance is led by NZ impact consultancy Eco Shepherd, supported by King’s High School Prefects (Dunedin, NZ) for strategic outreach; Vector Global Logistics (UK) for humanitarian freight and logistics; and UNESCO Ukraine for humanitarian logistics guidance. We will be announcing additional organisations joining the alliance over the coming weeks.
In war-torn Ukraine, education has become a lifeline for the hundreds of thousands of students whose schools lie in ruins. For vulnerable students, of all ages -particularly those from low-income families and orphanages—remote learning is often their only path to a future. Yet, without laptops, even this opportunity slips away.
The Ukraine Device Coalition has estimated that the education of 358,000 students was halted due to bombed school facilities or living in conflict-affects regions, and who lack the means to secure devices for remote learning. To date, 240,000 laptops have been secured but there are still 118,000 students without devices.
Our base target is to provide 10% of the remaining vulnerable students (10,000) with devices, but ultimately, we aim to close the gap by securing the 100,000+ new laptops needed to give every student in Ukraine the chance to recommence their education.
