Co-wrote and implemented the strategy to reduce repeat offender recividism through a nationwide grassroots recruitment programme for NZ Department of Corrections. Co-authors were rugby legend Michael Jones and iwi adviser Jade Hohiai, working alongside Corrections Creative agency, Ogilvy New Zealand. Over a month-long community-based programme running across New Zealand, over 200 new Māori and Pacifika Corrections Officers were signed-up to go through training with Department of Corrections.
New Zealand recidivism rates are high. Around 70% of people released from prison are reconvicted within two years. The reoffending rates for Māori are disproportionately high.
Offenders of Māori ethnicity make up 52% prison population. Pacific people make up 12% of inmates.
Prior to this initiative, less than 20% of Correction Officers were Māori or Pacifika descent.
